FAMILY and CONSUMER SCIENCE

 

 

Clothing and Textiles Grade Level 9-12 Credit ½

 

In this course you will study clothing as it relates to culture, history, social and economic situations. You will explore clothing and textiles as a medium for artistic expression. By learning clothing construction skills you will be able to increase your own wardrobe, evaluate the quality of ready-made garments, and be a better consumer. Careers will also be explored. Special projects will include tie dying, creating your own garment, clothing repair shop and the fashion baby form the past, and textile fabric labs.

 

 

Baking Basics 20 weeks Credit ½

 

A course for the beginner to experience the principles of baking. Nutrition will also be a component of the course, especially geared toward athletes. Food items that will be included in the course will be quick breads, yeast breads, cakes, pies, cookies, and sauces. An appliance report and recipe will be done by each student

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Housing and Design Grade Level 9-12 Credit ½

 

In this course you will investigate how lifestyle, social and economic factors, and stages in the life cycle influences housing decisions. You will identify and explore how culture and the environment influences housing design in relation to past, present, and future perspectives. Through hands-on experiences you will cover design elements and principles as they relate to architecture and interior design. You will evaluate household appliances and equipment by cooking demonstration, learn about caring for the home, and investigate energy conservation techniques. Careers related to housing and interior design will be explored. Field trips to Alta Industries and building sites will be arranged.

 

Gourmet Foods Grade Level 9-12 Credit ½

 

Gourmet Food is an in-depth course in food preparation. Students will learn about advanced preparation techniques, the importance of food appearance and presentation, and the use of specialized equipment. Careers related to food photography, food journalism, and food styling will be discussed. It is suggested that the module on Careers be integrated throughout the course rather than taught as a separate module.

 

Cultural Foods Grade Level 9-12 Credit ½

 

Culture and Foods will introduce students to the concept of the 'American “melting pot.” Through this course the students will explore a variety of culture specific foods and preparation techniques. These skills will help students begin to understand some of the ecological consequences of choices in the use of the environment and natural resources.

Food Preparation & Nutrition Grade Level 9-12 Credit ½

 

Food Preparation and Nutrition is a half-unit course. Seventy-five percent of this course should include the preparation of nutritious food products. Though the course is organized with more of the academic work in the beginning, it is intended that the laboratory experiences will dovetail the learnings outlined in the earlier section. Laboratory experiences will reinforce the need to reduce fats, salts, and sugars and increase complex carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals in the diet.

 

 

 

 

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America

A Middle School Elective

 

Bring your ideas because our projects will be based on you concerns and interests. Once you have successfully completed the “Introduction” activity and “The Power of One” activity, you are ready to begin your own personal project stemming from concerns for family, community or careers. Projects will be graded and must be connected to one of the 8 purposes of FCCLA Class members can work with a team or as individuals. Successful completion of the course requirements will result in ½ credit for the year. Class size is limited to ten members and eighth grade students sign up first.

 

FCCLA helps students understand themselves and their relationships with others whether they decide to pursue a project of choice or choose to be one of the officers of the organization. It’s all about team work and creative and critical thinking.
