Comprehensive Foundations of Music I and II Grade Level 9-12 Credit1

(Offered only as needed)

 

This course offers a discussion of basic music theory and the history of music. It is designed for the student who has a deeper interest in music and is interested in pursuing the realm of Classical Music Theory and History. The course covers basic music theory such as scales, chords, and basic 4-part harmony. Emphasis later in the course is placed on original composition and for arranging of original and popular material. Class methods depend upon the interest shown. The course can be taught either as a lecture class or as an independent study learning experience.

 

 

Senior Chorus Grade Level 7-12 Credit ½

 

Seniors chorus is open to all students – grades 9 through 12 with an interest in vocal music. Full year participation is requested.

 

 

INTRO TO THEATRE PRODUCTION AND PERFORMANCE

 

The components of dramatic art; attention to the contribution of acting, script, makeup, scenery, lighting, sound, and music to theatre and film. Emphasis will be on the art and craft of acting. We will examine actors’ performances on stage and screen. Discuss method acting and character development and if students are willing to try some acting.

 

 

Instrumental Music Grade Level 7-12 Credit 1

 

At the senior high level, students are given one small group lesson per week posed on a rotating schedule as all lessons are and attend three periods. Concert Band, Marching band, Jazz Ensemble, Wind ensemble and other spin-off groups, formed from the instrumentation needed and provided by the 7 – 12 student body, perform numerous styles of music. Independent study projects as well as participation at All-County Music and NYSSMA Festivals is encouraged at all levels. Field trips, competitions, parades, special assembles, community services, and more make the band program at this level most challenging and exciting.

 

 

A Comprehensive History of Rock Grade Level 9 -12 Credit ½

 

This class will be a comprehensive study of rock music beginning with its roots in the early 50s and progressing to the music of today. The course emphasis will be on the personalities of rock and the listening of the music itself. Some emphasis will be placed on the concept of rock as an instrument of social change and its effect on society over a 50 year span. No knowledge of music theory is required, and the course will not deal with music theory aspects. All that is required is an interest in listening to music and discussing the songs and people that have shaped our listening habits and styles since the 1950’s.
