Margaretville Central School is committed to providing the highest quality instruction and services to students who are identified as Limited English Proficient (LEP). It is the mission of Margaretville Central School district and the Limited English Proficient program to insure that all LEP students exit the program with knowledge and skill in the four standard areas designed by the State of New York and to be proficient in their oral and written English communications skills as well as social skills to be productive in school and in the community. |
Program Description |
The ESL program in the Margaretville Central School District is a program that uses English as the instructional language for students to achieve English proficiency and academic mastery of subject matter content, so they may achieve grade promotion and satisfy graduation requirements. Students are exposed to a learning environment in which they actively participate and instruction is presented using meaningful and realistic experiences. Students benefit from and have use of a fully equipped classroom. Eight computers provide software programs designed for use with LEP students, word processing and translation programs, vocabulary building programs and Internet access enhance students' LEP and mainstream classroom learning. Margaretville Central School also provides a district-wide computer software program” Success Maker", which all students in grades Kindergarten through eight participate in. This program is a self-paced assessment and tutorial program with program with program leveling and student individualization capabilities. The program can be offered in English language or other various languages for students to enhance their language capabilities. Paper resources in the classroom include English language textbooks designed for use with LEP students of varying levels, bilingual dictionaries and various educational resources in both the English language and the students' home language, including fiction and nonfiction Reading materials at all levels of study. Books on tape, as well as vocabulary programs on tape, are available for use at any time, both with teacher directed lessons or students' individual exploration and self-directed learning. Resources available for the younger LEP students include leveled readers designed to teach and enhance vocabulary in the English language, as well as materials from the "On Our Way to English" program by the Rigby Publishing Company, "English Explorers" series from the Benchmark Educational Language" DVD series is used to further enhance their English specking and learning needs. The hopeful outcome of these accommodations and instructional opportunities is to enable students to listen, speak, read, write, comprehend, and be proficient in the English language.
