Once On This Island
"Once On This Island" is based on the cultural, religious and racial divisions found in Haiti between the mulatto ruling class and the dark-skinned, rural peasants.  The original production in New York was strictly cast along these racial lines and the text makes reference in several places to skin color.  However, this story transcents the issue of race.  The Scitamard Society has chosen to perform this musical because it believes that it not only has music worthy of being performed and heard, but also because it deals with topics that, while relevant to Haiti in the 19th Century and beyond, are also relebant to our society today:  racial descrimination, acceptance and economic disparity.  Although the show has adult themes, Scitamard hopes that the script's message is seen as relevant and brings a sense of awareness and sensitivity to those who view their performance.
