Science and Chemistry Courses offered as of 2008

SCIENCE

Physical Setting: Physics Grades Level 11-12 Credit 1

Pre-Requisite: Successful completion of Chemistry and 3 years of high school math or permission of instructor.

The course is designed for those who intend to further their Science studies at college level. The course format follows the Physical Setting/Physics Core Curriculum as closely as possible. The course covers a wide range of physics topics such as measurement, forces, motion, thermal energy, wave motion, light, electricity, electromagnetism, and nuclear physics. In order to take Physics it is strongly recommended that students have a good science and math background.

Living Environment Grade Level 9-12 Credit 1

Pre-Requisite: Earth Science

This course examines the living world. The material covered will be based upon the NYS Regents Living Environment Core Curriculum. All required topics will be covered. Labs must be completed for credit. Credit given for full year only. All students take the Regents exam.

The Physical Setting: Chemistry Grade Level 10-12 Credit 1

Pre-Requisite: Earth and Living Environment Science and Math A

This course is based upon the NYS Regents curriculum. The information covered will include all required topics and selected optional topics. There will be one lab period per week. Laboratories must be completed for credit. Credit given for full year only. All students must take the Regents exam.

Physical Setting: Earth Science Grade Level 9 Credit 1

Earth Science is the study of planet Earth with a focus on the physical aspects. Characteristics and processes involved in Earth’s interior, surface, oceans, atmospheres and space are explored. Outside labs are conducted often, and students should be prepared for lab work, both inside and outside. There is a NYS minimum laboratory time requirement. There is a NYS Regents exam, both Lab practical and written, given in June.

Environmental Science Grade Level 11-12 Credit 1

Pre-requisite: Earth Science and Living Environment or permission of instructor.

Explores the complex, yet simple and delicate connections on, in and above the globe. Emphasis on human geography including diversity and utilization of natural resources, habitats, adaptations and social structures. Physical and cultural anthropology perspectives, among others, are explored. Local areas are used for exploring these concepts. Outside Lab work is mandatory. Must be prepared to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

Science Research Grade Level 10, 11 and 12 inclusive Credit 3 +

This is a student driven course which enables original scientific investigations to be initiated, explored, researched, conducted and presented by the students. Effort will result in professional level research and opportunities for awards, scholarships and recognition by scientific/academic community. Entering competitions is expected. Major points are listed below:

in Albany New York . All taught through MCS .

There are pre-enrollment requirements that must be completed during spring and summer of freshman year.

Leadership Grade Level 10-12 Credit 0

This is a student driven course which focuses on identifying goals, setting objectives, and creating a course of action to complete a variety of individual and group projects. These projects are chosen by the student and are based on self, school and community. Students learn how to overcome obstacles, handle mistakes and respond appropriately.

This is done primarily through identifying strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, practicing interpersonal skills, and networking. Students work with a variety of people in the school and community to complete their projects. However, the students are ultimately responsible for all phases of every project.

Please see instructor or Guidance for course requirements.

Advanced Leadership Grade Level 11-12 Credit 0

Pre-requisite: Leadership

Further exploration of the same project and personal management techniques experienced in Leadership, with a greater level of independence and responsibility required from the student.

Current Topics in Science

Current Topics in Science is a course designed for juniors and seniors to earn a third credit in science. CTiS is open to students who have successfully completed Earth Science and Biology. CTiS does not have a NYS Regents Exam, but the material covered will be aligned with the NYS Science Core Curricula.

Students will be expected to complete assigned readings and submit weekly written article reviews. There will be class discussion of topics in all areas of science: biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics. Students will complete a number of short and long term projects. Students will view a number of relevant feature films and complete study questions based on those films.

This is a full year course.
