3/17/20 & 3/18/20 Updates

Hello MCS family!

Well...day one (3/17) and two (3/18) have come and gone. We are slowly putting the infrastructure in place. I will be touching base with everyone again on Friday. Please remember to check out the communication plan that is published on Facebook and on the school website. What has happened so far?

  1. We delivered some of the Chromebooks that did not make it home Monday. We went door to door to try and put learning tools in the hands of families quickly.

  1. We started setting up our food delivery system that is going into effect next week. If you need food for your children’s breakfasts and lunches, call the school and dial 126 for Connie Mathiesen. Or you can email her at: [email protected]

  1. Teachers are searching a variety of digital resources to give parents assistance with review instruction. I would like to recommend kahnacademy.com and engageny.org. There are many helpful videos that students can use (and you can too!) that may be helpful. Slow the speed of the video to ½ speed whenever possible. And there is always a pause button. There are resources at the end of this video that may serve as enrichment tools.

  1. I noticed parents were thinking teachers did not have google classrooms set up already. This is partly due to the fact that not all teachers use digital resources. I would expect that these resources will come on line gradually. When in doubt, there are always questions and answers in textbooks. (Yes...speaking as someone who did it “the old-fashioned way”.) Also, if your son or daughter isn’t reading 20 minutes to an hour per day, he or she is missing out on valuable practice. Shut down those devices for a while.

  1. Remember if you need an immediate response regarding academics, please call the school and dial my extension 119. Follow the email requests in the communication plan for less urgent items.

  1. If you don’t have internet access, Spectrum is claiming that you can dial 1-844-488-8398 for free internet throughout the shutdown. I hope that they can do that for us here, but it might be worth a try.

  1. As of Wednesday,I have noticed that there have been no parent questions to date. While I am happy that for now we seem to have achieved a bit of balance, I want to reiterate that the best way to get information is using the methods in the communication plan. While Facebook is good for drawing attention to concerns or information, it tends to “muddy the waters” if we get too many conflicting voices.

Each time I communicate with families, I will be sending a little bit of inspiration. Let’s face it, we have launched on an adventure.

Quote for today: Security is mostly a superstition. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. (Helen Keller)

Stay well -

Mrs. Norris
