Over winter break, seven students from Margaretville Central School’s Spanish classes traveled to Spain with their Spanish teacher, Caitlin Sanford. Students participating in the trip were Edwin Flores, LilliAnn VanBenschoten, Grace Sanford, Riley Stake, Naomi Delpratt DiBenedetto, and Will and Vasilissa Hrazanek.
The group met their tour director, Alberto, in Madrid and spent two days exploring the city. Highlights included visits to Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace, the Prado Museum, Retiro Park, and Puerta del Sol. Students also sampled local cuisine, including paella and churros con chocolate.
While in Córdoba, the group toured the Mezquita and participated in a tapas-making class at a local restaurant. After the class, students enjoyed tasting the tapas they had prepared.
The next stop was Seville, where students spent two days visiting Plaza de España, La Giralda Bell Tower, Torre del Oro, Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza, and Las Setas de Sevilla—the largest wooden structure in the world. They also enjoyed a river cruise. On the second day, the group toured the Royal Alcázar and Seville Cathedral and attended a traditional flamenco performance.
In Toledo, students visited the Cathedral of Toledo, the Church of Santo Tomé, and a local synagogue. They also toured a sword factory, where they observed a demonstration of traditional sword-making techniques.
Due to weather-related travel delays in New York City, the group’s return flight was rescheduled, allowing them to visit two additional towns: Segovia, home to its famous Roman aqueduct, and Alcalá de Henares, the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes.
Students described the trip as an incredible experience. They had the opportunity to practice their Spanish in authentic, everyday situations while deepening their understanding of Spain’s rich history and culture.
The group extends sincere thanks to all who supported and helped make this meaningful educational experience possible. They look forward to creating similar opportunities for students in the future.
