As a culmination of a program started in October through the Trout in the Classroom (TIC) program, and made possible with a grant from the Catskill Watershed Corporation (CWC), Mrs. Denise Asher’s third grade class released 52 fingerling trout into the Delaware County watershed across the street from Margaretville School.
We raised these brown trout from an original 100 eggs beginning in October to fingerling size (about an inch long). Each week, as we checked in on our trout, we engaged in lessons on the trout lifecycle, feeding various sizes of food, measuring growth, comparing markings, and learning about the food chain, where trout fit within it, and the importance of healthy water systems.
This is the best year (in fish numbers) Margaretville has ever had with TIC! We look forward to partnering with them again and appreciate the Catskill Watershed Corporation (CWC) for their grant support. Special thanks to Floyd Knapp and John O’Reilly for their support, tank assistance, and help with the release!
