On Friday, September 18, Margaretville Central School students and staff had a unique opportunity to witness wildlife rehabilitation in action as former MCS science teacher Michael DiBenedetto, in collaboration with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), released two rehabilitated juvenile bald eagles on the schoolβs back fields.
The special event brought excitement to campus, with students buzzing about the experience throughout the hallways. Classes were invited to observe the release, connecting classroom learning to a memorable, real-world experience in wildlife conservation.
The two young eagles had spent time receiving care and rehabilitation at the Friends of Feathered and Furry Wildlife Center (FFFWC; https://www.nyshumane.org/spotlight-fff-wildlife-center/), a wildlife rehabilitation facility in the Catskills dedicated to helping sick and injured wild animals recover and return to their natural habitats.
FFFWC works closely with the DEC, veterinarians, and volunteers to provide injured and orphaned wildlife with a second chance. The center has specialized facilities for rehabilitating bald eagles, including a large flight cage that allows the birds to rebuild their strength and flying abilities before returning to the wild.
Wildlife rehabilitation plays an important role in protecting native species. Bald eagles can face numerous challenges, including lead poisoning, disease, habitat loss, and injuries. Through the dedication of wildlife rehabilitators and conservation partners, many injured birds are able to recover and return to their natural environments.
For MCS students, witnessing the release was an exciting reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship, wildlife protection, and the work that goes into caring for the natural world around us.
Margaretville Central School extends its thanks to Michael DiBenedetto, the New York State DEC, and the Friends of Feathered and Furry Wildlife Center for sharing this meaningful experience with our school community.
A special day at MCSβand a new beginning for two magnificent bald eagles!
