Fire Prevention Week is October 4β10 this year. Each year, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) focuses on an important fire-safety theme. This year, we are once again focusing on safe charging and the importance of understanding how to safely use and charge devices powered by lithium-ion batteries.
With technology being such an important part of our daily lives, it is essential that we all understand safe charging habits and what we can do to reduce the possibility of fires caused by lithium-ion batteries. Many of the devices we use every dayβincluding phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes, and scootersβrun on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These batteries store a great deal of energy in a small space. When they are damaged or charged improperly, they can overheat, start a fire, or even explode. Learning and practicing safe charging habits can help keep our homes, schools, and communities safe.
Fire Safety Day at Margaretville Central School
On October 22, members of the Arkville Fire Department, Fleischmanns Fire Department, and Middletown-Hardenburgh Fire Department, along with Margaretville Memorial Hospital, will be visiting Margaretville Central School to share important information about fire safety and safe charging.
During a presentation, students will learn about:
Safe charging practices and lithium-ion battery safety
Fire safety tips for home and school
The gear and equipment firefighters wear and use
What it takes to become a firefighter
How local emergency responders help keep our community safe
Students will also have the exciting opportunity to explore emergency vehicles outside. They will be able to look inside an ambulance and see multiple fire trucks from our local fire departments.
We are incredibly grateful to the volunteers and emergency responders who take time out of their busy lives to visit our school and share their knowledge and experiences with our students. These community members not only educate our children about important safety practices, but they also dedicate their time and energy every day to helping protect our community.
Thank You to Our Community Volunteers
We would also like to recognize and thank the members of our school community who dedicate their time to supporting our local fire departments and emergency services.
Within our school community, we are proud to have:
Ms. Caitlyn Roberts, who volunteers with the Arkville Fire Department
Mr. Floyd Knapp, who volunteers with the Middletown-Hardenburgh Fire Department
Ms. Annie Vankleeck, who volunteers with the Olive Fire Department
Grace Grocholl, a student who volunteers with the Arkville Fire Department
Thank you to all of these individuals, as well as the many other community members who volunteer their time and talents to keep our community safe. Your dedication, service, and willingness to give back make a tremendous difference, and we are proud to have you as part of our school community.
Thank you to all of our local firefighters, emergency responders, and volunteers for everything you do to keep our community safe!
