School may have just started but our Margaretville FCCLA has been busy all summer!
Margaretville FCCLA proudly represented their school and community at the highly
anticipated FCCLA National Leadership Conference (NLC) held at the Seattle Convention
Center from June 29 – July 3, 2024. This annual event brought together more than 8,000
passionate Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) student members,
advisers, and guests.
The conference provided Margaretville FCCLA members an amazing experience, including
attending inspiring speaker sessions, engaging in youth workshops, competing nationally,
and networking with fellow youth leaders. Centered around "The Ultimate Journey," this
conference highlighted how FCCLA offers exceptional prospects to its members and
advisers through Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) education. By exploring career
opportunities and instilling real-world skills, advocacy, and service, FCCLA empowers its
members to make an impact that will guide them on their ultimate journey.
Sandy Spavone, Executive Director of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America,
expressed her enthusiasm: "This year has been nothing short of amazing, filled with
milestones that reflect FCCLA’s unwavering dedication to its cause. We are thrilled to have
welcomed over 8,000 members, advisers, corporate partners, and guests who are dedicated
to discovering the unlimited possibilities available through FCCLA."
During the conference, LilliAnn Van Benschoten, Avery Fairbairn, and Madison Rizzo
showcased their exceptional talent and dedication by participating in various events. Their
remarkable achievements reflect their hard work, determination, and the guidance of their
advisers. LilliAnn Van Benschoten competed in level 1 Fashion Construction, earning a gold
medal and a national 2nd place finish. She also was selected in the Top 20 and displayed
her peacock-inspired dress at the fashion show. Madison Rizzo and Avery Fairbairn
competed in Level 1 Recycle and Repurpose and earned silver medals with their beautifully
displayed recycled jewelry. Ms. Karn, FACS Teacher and Margaretville FCCLA advisor was
honored with the National Spirit of Advising Award.
While in Seattle the group took a boat tour of Puget Sound, toured the famous Pikes Market
with a local chef, and went High in the sky in Seattle's iconic Space Needle. Looking ahead,
FCCLA will be hosting its next National Leadership Conference in Orlando, FL from July 5 -
9, 2025.
Additionally, at the end of July, students and staff from Margaretville CSD attended FCCLA’s
Summer Leadership where they joined youth leaders from across the state to participate in
the event held at SUNY Oneonta. Advisor Dove Karn, NYS Board of Trustees member led a
group of student members.
Student Addison Passarelli (7th Grade) participated in the Junior Leader Program. This
program is where students learn the FCCLA Creed, the planning process, STAR Events, and
National Programs. She will also attend Fall Leadership this October and will be
instrumental in planning the NYS FCCLA Spring Leadership Conference.
Other MCS students completed the District Representative Training program led by General
Brown Teaching Assistant Wendy Johnson and Margretville FACS teacher Dove Karn. In this
group the students did workshops in FCCLA trivia, STEP 1, Planning Process, Service
Learning, Creating a Great Chapter, and officer roles. The following students participated in
this: 9th Grade - LilliAnn VanBenschoten; 9th Grade - Grace Fairbairn, 8th Grade- Julia
Balcom Salazar, 9th Grade- Angel Garcia Jimenez.
All of the attendees also participated in a community outreach program, collecting over 300
items for the Oneonta Red Dragon Food Pantry. Besides the drive, the members all
completed a vision board seminar, parliamentary procedure workshop, conflict
management training, and membership campaigns. Besides all the hard work there were
camp games and crafts.

Please note: Incoming UPK & KDG students/families - Tomorrow's Meet & Greet will begin at 8:00 am.
We can't wait to see everyone!!

This wasn't planned, we swear! Superintendent Osterhoudt and Mr. John O'Reilly were twinning the other day! 😎👒

Mr. Marks did a walkthrough with some of our Board of Ed and new Principal, Donna Marsh. It's amazing how our maintenance and custodial pull it all together after summer cleaning and maintenance! Student worker Dakota and night Custodian Michael Smith are hard at work! Thank you!

The Admin Team, MCS Teachers, Board President Doris Warner, and Superintendent Osterhoudt spent the last couple of days in Ithaca NY attending a Diversity Thought Symposium hosted by the New York State Council of School Superintendents. Thought leaders across the country came together to discuss instruction, restorative practices, and how to take care of ourselves, our students, and make better use of our time.
We already know we are a diverse learning community, so a key takeaway is that Margaretville students NEED to have access to the best learning opportunities because they DESERVE it!

Superintendent Osterhoudt had the honor of representing Margaretville Central School! She was asked to provide expert testimony at the Rockefeller Institute Public Hearing on Foundation Aid at Laurens Central school Thursday afternoon. Superintendent Osterhoudt and her colleagues from the region all advocated for rural schools! Rural schools deserve all the opportunities and the appropriate funding to create those opportunities. Superintendent Osterhoudt also bumped into a former Margaretville grad, Genesis, who was working security at the event!

Mr. Marks, Building Administrator for Operations and Student Activities, mops up a wet spot from a leak from the heavy rains. Mr. Marks can always be counted on to take care of our beloved MCS. He, along with some seriously dedicated staff, make us proud. Before Superintendent Osterhoudt left for the day, she checked in with him and found him making the rounds, making sure the building was ok. #MCSPRIDE
