MCS has again teamed up with the Catskill Water Discovery Center to kick off Camp H2O. 6th graders dove into all aspects of the Catskill Mt. Watershed. After being introduced to the importance of watershed across the world, and the flooding events of 2011, students traveled to the Village Park Pavillion for a day of exploration including stream life, flooding benefits and challenges, and strategies to mitigate flooding. They heard of the practical and economic challenges of flood clean up, studied a topographic map of Margaretville depicting the tie between elevation measurement and the understanding of flood threats in the village. After touring the village to see flood mitigation efforts first hand, they worked in teams to design and build a flood mitigation system that would reduce the damage of flood waters, and keep their "house" dry. They had fun watching each of the flood mitigation design "tested" to determine if they met the standards set. The day was made possible by energetic volunteers including Mayor John Hubbell, Stream management expert Rudd Hubbell and retired educator Barbara Hubbell and a collection of area volunteers. The H2O experience continues as students hear stories of the watershed from Dr. Bill Birns. Students will then be supported by science teacher Evette Garofolo, ELA teacher Max Brandt, and Art teacher Katy DiBenedetto to create an original story, poem, essay, or piece of art that depicts their connection to the Watershed. Student work will be celebrated in a display at the Catskill Water Discovery Center in the fall!

Tonight, Margaretville Central School's own Hunter Balcom received his Scholar Recognition Award at a special dinner hosted at SUNY Oneonta. The Scholar Recognition Program recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement by a member of the graduating classes of the public, private and parochial secondary schools in the DCMO and ONC BOCES supervisory area. The program also recognizes teachers nominated by each student scholar for having a significant and beneficial influence on his/her education. Hunter chose science teacher, Evette Garofolo as his mentor. Hunter was accompanied by his parents, Khristen and Brian Balcom, high school counselor, Brittany Triebe, and superintendent Michelle Osterhoudt. We are proud of Hunter and Mrs. Garofolo! Congratulations!
