Earlier today, students Caden Anfimovas, Alani Mendez, and Hunter Balcom participated in a discussion with educational leaders, including their superintendent, board president, and representatives from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the State Capitol. A highlight was a conversation with NYSED Commissioner Dr. Betty Rosa, who stressed the importance of deeper learning experiences.
Key topics included regionalization—collaboration between school districts to share resources—and the need for more specialized courses and career pathways for students. Superintendent Michelle Osterhoudt, Board President Doris Warner and ONC BOCES Superintendent, Dr. Catherine Huber, highlighted Margaretville's existing regional partnerships.
Students want more advanced coursework options, emphasizing a desire for more AP classes and dual-enrollment opportunities to better prepare them for college readiness.
Mental health resources were another major topic. Students discussed personal challenges and advocated for greater support across all schools. Superintendent Osterhoudt noted recent efforts to enhance mental health services within the district despite funding constraints.
As the discussion wrapped up, NYSED officials invited students to help shape future education policy through a proposed student advisory group—a move that received enthusiastic support from attendees.
Overall, this dialogue provided valuable insights into rural education challenges while paving the way for potential changes that could greatly benefit students at Margaretville Central School and beyond. The engagement of students in these conversations underscores their role as vital contributors to shaping an educational landscape that meets their needs effectively.
